An Evening with Nthabi at the House of Nsako

As seen by N. Mqulwana

Okay, so this time it's just me & my cherry red pumaz pounding the pavement and again making way to DJ BlaQ T's live B-side gig at House Of Nsako.
The petite Nthabi & her band 'pon the mic. This venue, the place of imagination, nostalgia, history (& ol' shoes) on the wall & dimlight is soon becoming a regular destination not only for me but also for the plethora of familiar faces of the HIP-HOP scene (aka the Johannesburg Hip Hop Sect).
And you know the drill, we arrive, we drink, talk, dance & eventually, the act gets on stage & we pay attention. And the formula is no different tonight. Nthabi plus Bantu an excellent bass guitarist; drummer & humble keyboardist from “Late Antique“ begin.
A number of songs in & someone comments about how her sound now is more like unplugged poetry and not straight up rap. Not knowing whether I can agree or not my thought is, thus & perhaps the title of her upcoming album “Welcome to me“ (Outrageous Records). I figure if this is who she is then we have to grow with her and deal. It seems Nthabi enjoys sharing the stage. Tonight Candy and of course Reason make their way up there to keep the energy of the perfomance up.
It is what it is although I do struggle to hear content at these LIVE band perfomances. The sound needs a lot of engineering but as outsourcing accumulates cost, sometimes the show has to go on without some components and that's all good as long as people are always REACHING for better & better.
With the rise of the trend of live band plus mcee in S.A and across the world the question is this: does it suit and is it for every mcee? Is it what everyone should be going for? Can it be a one size fits all? Nothing is clear cut & we all make our choices but what I do know for sure is that it needs a voice, BIG personality and perfomer savvy. It needs command. And I can't say much for those attributes here. However, like said before, what is important and admirable I add, is that people are always REACHING for the sky. Little chatter with Dzino, MD of Outrageous Records, in the hope for a scoop with regards to a release date didn't summon much beyond “when it's done“ which I can respect considering the many unforseen hurdles people on any mission encounter. The perfomance does suggest “personal album“ but then again aren't most? On the encore Reason made it to stage to do “music“. He has fun on stage and it's soon done. I have to point out the explosive come back after the perfomance with Talib & Hi-Teks “move sumthin“ & boy did we move sumthin. fun is always had at Nsako an I cannot wait for the crowd numbers to pick up because it is a worthy exploration.
Till the next, may peace & harmony become.
